“HACCP is at the core of everything we do, and is the most complex part of food safety management in a large organization like Nestlé,” said John Donaghy, Global Head of Food Safety at Nestlé. “The new digital solution gives us the agility to create, manage, and streamline our HACCP studies more efficiently, helping us respond faster to changes and prevent safety issues before they escalate.”
In a significant step forward for the food and beverage industry, Veeva Consumer Products recently announced its new Digital HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) solution as part of the Veeva QualityOne suite.
This groundbreaking cloud-based technology promises to modernize food safety management by automating and streamlining HACCP processes, enabling food and beverage companies to proactively assess hazards and define the appropriate food safety controls. Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, is an early adopter of the solution, further reinforcing its potential to set a new standard for food safety management.
A Significant Step Forward in Food Safety Management
HACCP, the backbone of food safety management, ensures that hazards are systematically identified and assessed to provide appropriate controls throughout the production process. However, for decades, many companies have relied on manual, siloed methods to manage HACCP plans, often leading to inefficiencies, reduced visibility, and delayed responses to emerging issues.
Veeva’s Digital HACCP solution introduces several innovations to simplify the creation of HACCP studies, helping to reduce mistakes, and providing the governance of a portfolio of HACCP plans. Central to these innovations is its design based structured data. This allows for standardization of important masterdata, like hazards and control measures in both the individual HACCP study as well across the portfolio of studies.
Based on this structured data approach, Digital HACCP provides an integrated flow diagram that allows for the drag and drop creation of all the elements in the flow diagram, and its side panel for the end-to-end analysis of all hazards associated with the steps in the flow diagram. Bringing all HACCP plans together in a single application allows for governance with real-time reporting of any data point across all HACCP plans. This would be impossible with HACCP plans defined in many spreadsheet files as is currently practiced across the F&B industry.
Furthermore, the structured data approach allows for integration with many different systems, automating keeping information of products and ingredients up to date, or being notified on changes in hazard risk or on emerging hazards. These capabilities enhance decision-making, reduce the likelihood of errors, and ensure a consistent approach to food safety.
“Our goal is to enable food safety professionals to move beyond reactive risk management,” says Greg Harbin, General Manager of Veeva Consumer Products. “This solution is designed to help companies prevent issues before they escalate, fostering consumer trust and delivering operational excellence.”
Nestlé Partners with Veeva to Set New Standard for Industry
As a pioneer in food safety practices, Nestlé has consistently demonstrated leadership in adopting innovative technologies to maintain the highest safety and quality standards across its extensive product portfolio. By partnering with Veeva, Nestlé is leveraging the Digital HACCP solution to simplify procedures, standardize processes across its global operations, and respond to potential hazards in near real-time.
“Quality is what ties everything together, because at the end it is what makes the product what it is and what the consumer likes,” said Olivier Mignot, Global Head of Quality Management at Nestlé. “Food safety is our foundation for trust and without it there are no brands, no products, no business. Digital HACCP is at the core of food safety management, helping us identify hazards and design plans or checks to address them.”
The partnership also addresses long-standing industry challenges such as fragmented systems and inconsistent data, which have historically hindered HACCP's effectiveness. With Veeva’s digital solution, Nestlé gains global visibility across its HACCP portfolio while accommodating regional market differences—an essential feature for managing operations in 188 countries.
However, the collaboration between Veeva and Nestlé is more than a technological upgrade; it’s a step toward establishing a new industry standard. HACCP is widely regarded as an area of non-competition within the food and beverage sector, making it an ideal focus for collective innovation. Veeva’s Digital HACCP solution, co-developed with Nestlé, is expected to be embraced by other industry leaders, fostering widespread improvements in food safety management practices.
“By integrating Veeva’s advanced technology with Nestlé’s expertise in food safety, we are modernizing HACCP management to enhance the reliability of safety protocols,” says Harbin. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to flawless food safety and elevating industry standards.”
